Lesson 1.1 — Course Introduction

Every day, you provide the most direct and sustained care that residents in this facility receive. You help with bathing, dressing, and mobility. You answer call lights, assist with meals, and observe residents throughout your shift. Because of that daily contact, you are in a position where your actions can either protect residents from infection — or inadvertently allow one to spread.

This module covers the foundations of infection prevention in long-term care. You will learn why infections are a serious risk in this setting, how germs spread from person to person, and what you can do at every step of your work to interrupt that spread.

Key terms are explained when they first appear. You do not need to memorize definitions — you need to understand what each concept means for the residents in your care and what it means for what you do.

Let's get started.
