Infection Prevention, Standard Precautions & Resident Safety

4 CE Hours
Start Course

This four-hour online continuing education course is designed for California Certified Nurse Assistants working in skilled nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, long-term care settings, and other settings within CNA scope. The course builds on foundational infection prevention knowledge and skills acquired during CNA certification training, with direct application to the duties and responsibilities of the CNA in a health facility.

The course provides comprehensive instruction in the chain of infection and how CNA actions interrupt transmission; Standard Precautions including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment selection and use, respiratory hygiene, environmental and equipment safety, and handling of soiled linen and waste; Transmission-Based Precautions (Contact, Droplet, and Airborne) and the CNA's role under each; Enhanced Barrier Precautions as implemented in nursing homes and how they differ from Contact Precautions; environmental and equipment cleaning and disinfection principles; and resident safety — including the recognition and prompt reporting of observations that may indicate a change in condition or a possible infection.

Instruction uses written didactic content, guided clinical examples, and separate graded module knowledge checks. The course concludes with a comprehensive final examination. All content is specific to CNA scope of practice; the course does not teach nursing assessment, diagnosis, or clinical decision-making beyond CNA responsibilities.
