Course Description:
This course is designed to provide non-anesthesia registered nurses with comprehensive training in the administration and monitoring of moderate (conscious) sedation. Participants will learn the essential skills required for safe and effective sedation practices across various clinical settings, such as the emergency department, outpatient surgery centers, and special procedures units. The course covers patient assessment, medication administration, airway management, and the recognition and management of sedation-related complications. Nurses will gain knowledge of the legal, ethical, and safety considerations involved in providing moderate sedation.
Course Objectives:
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Define moderate sedation and differentiate it from deep sedation and anesthesia.
- Describe the legal and ethical responsibilities of nurses administering moderate sedation.
- Identify and perform pre-procedure patient assessments, including ASA classification and airway evaluation.
- Explain the pharmacology of commonly used sedative and analgesic medications and their effects.
- Demonstrate the safe administration of sedative medications while monitoring patients for adverse reactions.
- Recognize and manage complications associated with sedation, such as respiratory depression and airway obstruction.
- Apply evidence-based protocols for the safe discharge and follow-up care of sedated patients.
- Utilize effective communication strategies to educate patients and families about the sedation process.
