Advanced Airway Management

Course Description:

This self-paced online course provides comprehensive, clinically relevant training in advanced airway management for medical professionals. Designed for RNs, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other licensed healthcare providers, this course focuses on the knowledge and decision-making skills necessary to recognize, manage, and troubleshoot airway emergencies in critical care, emergency, and prehospital settings.

Students will explore airway anatomy and physiology, assessment tools, basic and advanced airway devices, pharmacologic interventions, and surgical airway theory through a structured, multimedia learning experience. Interactive case studies and downloadable resources reinforce key principles and build confidence in applying airway management strategies in real-world scenarios.

Note: This is a non-hands-on, theory-based course. It prepares students for clinical application and complements—but does not replace—hands-on skills verification or certification programs.

? Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the anatomy and physiology of the upper airway, lower airway, lungs, and alveolar gas exchange system.

  2. Differentiate between basic and advanced airway management techniques and select appropriate tools for various clinical scenarios.

  3. Perform an accurate airway assessment, including recognition of anatomical red flags and predictors of difficult intubation.

  4. Interpret signs of airway obstruction or compromise, including stridor, altered mental status, and abnormal respiratory effort.

  5. Explain the indications, contraindications, and procedural steps for endotracheal intubation and rapid sequence intubation (RSI).

  6. Describe the pharmacology of commonly used induction agents and paralytics in airway management.

  7. Demonstrate understanding of supraglottic devices and their application in prehospital and in-hospital settings.

  8. Outline the steps and theoretical considerations of emergency surgical airways, including needle and surgical cricothyrotomy.

  9. Analyze the unique airway needs of pediatric, geriatric, trauma, bariatric, and burn patients.

  10. Identify and troubleshoot common airway complications, including failed intubation, esophageal placement, and oxygen equipment failure.

  11. Apply V/Q mismatch concepts to clinical airway decisions, including oxygen delivery and ventilation strategies.

  12. Integrate clinical knowledge to prioritize airway interventions and escalate care appropriately in emergent situations.
